I didn’t bring my horse, but I left a better rider

I just returned from a weeklong retreat with Horse Help and the Gascon family in Mississippi, and I’m still riding the high of what can only be described as a truly life-changing experience. I went in expecting a traditional clinic—some instruction, a bit of riding, a few new tools to take home. What I got was a five-day immersive experience that completely transformed the way I think about horsemanship.

Michael Gascon was our main instructor, and let me just say—he is truly an unexpected personality in the horse world. With all of his accomplishments and accolades, you’d expect someone polished and serious. Instead, he teaches with an incredible mix of humility, humor, and heart. He makes the learning fun, approachable, and real. No ego, no intimidation—just someone who genuinely wants you to win with your horse.

The lessons were presented in the most straightforward, easy-to-understand way No fluff, no complicated jargon—just real, effective methods that anyone can understand and apply. And while the concepts were simple, the impact was anything but. The techniques I learned are going to forever change how I communicate with and redirect my horse.

I didn’t bring my own horse this time, but that didn’t take away from the experience one bit. The Gascon horses are amazing—well-trained, professional-level show horses that can do anything you ask of them. Working with these horses gave me a chance to focus fully on learning, building my confidence, and really locking in the techniques. But make no mistake—next time, my horse is coming with me!

Another standout was the diversity of riders. We had dressage riders, trail riders, eventers, new riders, and folks who brought their “problem horses” looking for breakthroughs. It didn’t matter your background or experience—everyone was welcomed, supported, and grew in their own way.

And we played games!! But not just for fun. These were high-energy, carefully designed exercises that challenged us to communicate clearly, lead with purpose, and stay present. What seemed playful on the outside turned out to be some of the most impactful horsemanship lessons I’ve ever experienced.

The accommodations were cozy, the food was absolutely delicious (all home-cooked!), and the Gascon family? They welcome you like one of their own. I left with a new perspective, new skills, and a serious craving to go back again.

If you’re looking to grow—not just as a horseperson, but as a leader and partner to your horse—this is the place!

What a great experience it sounds like you had at our Horse Retreat! Michael Gascon’s teaching style and the supportive atmosphere of the retreat really seem to have made a lasting impact. The hands-on, diverse learning environment and the focus on both horse and rider development are so inspiring! Thank you for attending and we hope to see you back here soon!

If only I could give 10 stars

This retreat was by far the best. Michael continues to layer everything we have learned so far and add new information to take us farther and push us a little more out of our comfort zone to achieve more at every retreat, but never too far. He is a truly gifted teacher. The other ladies were such great supporters and we all became dear friends. I can now gallop on my horse, which honestly is like flying...floating on air. And I can do it with no fear because Michael prepped us with instruction on proper seat and leg position. I love retreats.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience from the Spring 2025 #2 Advanced Boot Camp Retreat! We are so happy to hear that Michael's teaching continues to inspire and push you forward while keeping you comfortable. It’s amazing that you’ve reached the point of galloping with confidence and joy!

One of the BEST retreats and confidence builders

I have attended several retreats, and somehow, they just get better and better! It seemed all the horses and riders were on similar levels and we all had growth in ourselves and our horses. We all pushed past our comfort zones and it was exhilarating! Highly recommend.

It sounds like such a transformative experience a the 2025 Cattle Retreat! It’s amazing when everyone is on the same wavelength and can grow together, both as riders and with the horses. Pushing past comfort zones is always a huge leap, but it’s so rewarding when it pays off. Thank you !

AMAZING Experience

I wasn’t sure what to expect but Horse Help revealed a week full of training, riding, encouragement, laughter, fellowship, friendship and great food. Horse Help truly introduced me to what could be with my horse - it’s up to me and time I spend in the saddle to ride in the discipline of my choice - thanks to Horse Help for giving me the tools I need !

It sounds like the 2025 Cattle Retreat was a game-changer for you! I’m so glad it gave you the confidence and tools to ride in your chosen discipline. The mix of training, support, and fun really seems like the perfect combination. Enjoy the journey ahead with your horse!

Cattle retreat

I recently attended the Cattle Retreat with Michael Gascon. This has been one of the my favorite retreats, having attending a few before this. The prior retreats, along with the Horse Help Challenge, The Horse Help Course and Horse Help College, prepared me to get the most out of the Cattle Retreat. In fact, it far exceeded my expectations. I have gone from a rider lacking confidence after a fall with injury to regaining my confidence, finding balance in my seat and GALLOPING my Paso Fino Mare , Serafina, chasing a roping dummy. I felt like I was 11 years old again ( I’m 63 years old). One transition I experienced riding at the cattle retreat was I began to ride with intention . Michael would call it Instinctual Riding. This is where all of the technical riding skills I have learned, while still present and keeping me safe, took at back seat to riding in partnership with Serafina using intention and natural body language to ride. Basically, I was able to get out of my head and out of my own way, to enjoy some of the best and most fun riding I have ever dreamed. I am over the moon happy.
I highly recommend starting a training journey with Michael Gascon. You will be glad you did. I sure am.

Wow, it’s incredible to hear how much the 2025 Cattle Retreat transformed your riding! It sounds like Michael’s training really helped you overcome past challenges and rediscover the joy of riding. Your experience is truly inspiring—especially galloping at with such confidence! Thanks for sharing your journey.
