Training Tips

Horse owners often ask me, “What grooming products do you actually use every day at the ranch?” In this post, I’m going to walk you through the exact products we use at Gascon Horsemanship for grooming, bathing, and maintaining our horses’ coats—straight from the horse’s mouth.

Important Note: We’re not sponsored by any of the brands mentioned below. These are simply the most effective, affordable products we’ve found through years of hands-on experience with performance and training horses.

🧴 Grooming Products We Swear By

1. Olive Oil Sheen Spray (Yes, From the Dollar Store!)

One of our secret weapons for show-quality manes and tails is an olive oil sheen spray—originally made for human hair. It’s packed with coconut oil, costs under $5, and is available at most dollar stores.

Why we use it:

  • Conditions and detangles the mane and tail

  • Prevents breakage and dryness

  • Leaves a glossy, show-ready finish

We use this every time a brush touches a horse’s mane or tail. It makes a noticeable difference in keeping the hair healthy and strong.

2. Laser Sheen Concentrate

This is one of the few horse-specific products we use and love. Laser Sheen is a grooming spray that adds shine and helps repel dust and dirt.

How we apply it:

  • A light mist before riding

  • Another coat after bathing (once excess water is removed)

It’s concentrated, so one $13 bottle goes a long way when diluted with water.

🪰 Fly Spray That Actually Works

3. Pyranha Fly Sprays: Stock Guard & Wipe N’ Spray

Dealing with flies? Here’s what works for us:

  • Stock Guard Concentrate ($70): Best for large barns or when you have multiple horses in training. Just dilute and spray.

  • Wipe N’ Spray ($60): Perfect for 1–2 horses. No dilution needed. Strong and effective, with a nice oily finish that also helps the coat shine.

Bonus: This fly spray not only repels insects but also enhances your horse’s appearance when used during grooming.

🛁 Bath Time Essentials (Surprisingly Affordable)

4. Suave Shampoo & Conditioner

Skip the overpriced horse shampoos. We use regular Suave shampoo from Walmart or the dollar store—just $1 a bottle!

  • High-quality ingredients (because it's made for humans)

  • Effective and budget-friendly

  • We even use Suave conditioner and olive oil leave-in conditioner for dry manes and tails

5. Dandruff Shampoo for Itchy Horses

For horses with itchy skin or dandruff, we reach for a dollar store Head & Shoulders knockoff ($3). It’s our go-to before we ever try medicated creams or vet-prescribed solutions.

Why it works:

  • Reduces irritation

  • Clears up dandruff

  • Saves you from spending $50+ on medicated treatments

🧴 Healing and Hair Regrowth

6. Nu-Stock: The Ultimate Skin Treatment

Every barn needs Nu-Stock. This sulfur-based ointment is a miracle worker for:

  • Scrapes and rub marks

  • Bite wounds

  • Bald patches or hair loss

Yes, it smells bad—but it works wonders. Nu-Stock encourages healthy hair regrowth, and the hair often comes back in the original color. It's great for common horse injuries and abrasions.

🐴 Final Thoughts: World-Class Results on a Budget

The truth is, you don’t need to break the bank to take excellent care of your horse. From dollar store olive oil spray to budget shampoos and fly spray concentrates, every product we use at Gascon Horsemanship is chosen for one reason: it works.

Our grooming routine has helped produce world and national champions. It’s not about the price tag—it’s about daily consistency and smart product choices.

So whether you're prepping for a show or just want your horse to look and feel amazing, give these products a try. You’ll be surprised at how far your dollar can go.
